The Fast and the Furious movies – an overview
The Fast and the Furious is a franchise centered around street racing and heists. The first movie in the franchise was released in 2001, and the latest movie was released in 2017. There have been eight movies released in total. The movies have been generally well-received by audiences, with the first movie being the most successful.
The movies follow a group of street racers as they get entangled in various illegal activities. The group consists of Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker), Mia (Jordana Brewster), and Vince (Matt Schulze). They are often pursued by law enforcement, specifically Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson). As the franchise has progressed, new characters have been introduced, such as Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel).

The first movie in the franchise – The Fast and the Furious
The Fast and the Furious is a 2001 American action film directed by Rob Cohen and written by Gary Scott Thompson and David Ayer. The first installment in the Fast & Furious franchise, it stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Rick Yune, Chad Lindberg, Johnny Strong and Ted Levine.
The film follows an undercover cop named Brian O’Conner (Walker) who is tasked with investigating a gang of street racers suspected of hijacking trucks. The leader of the gang is Dominic Toretto (Diesel), Brian’s childhood friend who he had fallen out with after an incident years earlier. The two are drawn into a world of illegal street racing and criminality that culminates in a spectacular truck heist that earns the gang millions of dollars in loot.
The film was released in the United States on June 22, 2001 to critical and commercial success, becoming the first film in the franchise to gross over $200 million at the worldwide box office. It is notable for being one of diesel’s breakout roles, as well as establishing many of the key characters and themes that would carry throughout the subsequent films in the series.
The second movie – 2 Fast 2 Furious
The second movie in the series is titled 2 Fast 2 Furious and was released in 2003. It stars Vin Diesel as ex-convict Dominic Toretto and Paul Walker as undercover police officer Brian O’Conner. The two characters work together to take down a drug lord in Miami.
The third movie – The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
The third movie – The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift – was released in 2006 and was the first of the series not to feature Paul Walker. It follows the story of his character’s estranged son, played by Lucas Black, who moves to Tokyo to live with his father and becomes involved in the world of drift racing.
The movie was not as well-received as the first two movies in the series, but it did manage to gross more than $158 million worldwide.
The fourth movie – Fast & Furious

The sixth movie – Fast & Furious 6
The sixth movie – Fast & Furious 6 brings back all the original characters plus some new ones. The Rock makes an appearance as a new character in this film. The crew is brought back together by Hobbs to take down a terrorist organization led by Owen Shaw, played by Luke Evans.
The seventh movie – Furious 7
The seventh movie in the Fast and the Furious franchise is simply titled Furious 7. The film was released in 2015, and it grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Furious 7 picks up after the events of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, with Vin Diesel’s character Dom Toretto now living in Los Angeles. When his friend and fellow street racer Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) is targeted by a vengeful terrorist named Ian Shaw (Jason Statham), Toretto must put aside his differences with Brian and help him take down Shaw.
The movie also features Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs, a federal agent who has crossed paths with Dom and his crew in the past. Along with newcomers such as Scott Eastwood and Kristofer Hivju, the cast of Furious 7 also includes returning stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jordana Brewster, and Sung Kang.
Directed by James Wan, Furious 7 is considered one of the best films in the Fast and the Furious franchise by many fans and critics alike.
The eighth movie – The Fate of the Furious
The Fate of the Furious (alternatively known as Fast & Furious 8 and Fast 8) is a 2017 American action film directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Chris Morgan. It is the eighth installment in The Fast and the Furious franchise. The film stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Scott Eastwood, Nathalie Emmanuel and Kurt Russell. In The Fate of the Furious, Dominic Toretto (Diesel) is lured into working for Cipher (Theron), a mysterious woman who turns him against his former team, forcing them to confront Dom’s betrayal.
The upcoming ninth movie – Fast & Furious 9
The ninth movie in the Fast & Furious franchise is currently in development, with plans to release it in 2019.
The movie will continue the story of Dominic Toretto (played by Vin Diesel) and his team of street racers as they try to stop a powerful new villain.
