The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning two for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Editing.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 epic fantasy drama film co-produced, co-written, and directed by Peter Jackson based on the second and third volumes of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. It is the third instalment in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, following The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Two Towers (2002), preceding The Hobbit film trilogy (2012–14).
Set in Middle-earth, the film follows the course of the War of the Ring, in which Frodo Baggins and his fellowship of companions set out to destroy the One Ring to keep Sauron from further expanding his rule. Tolkien’s work was originally published in three volumes in 1954–55; Jackson adapted each into separate films.
The Return of the King was released on 17 December 2003 in New Zealand, 20 December 2003 in Australia, and on 10 December 2003 internationally. Initially announced with a release date just five days after its world premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on 1 December 2003, it went on to gross over $1.1 billion worldwide, making it one of 2002’s highest-grossing films and Jackson’s second film to enter that category after The Fellowship of the Ring. With an estimated budget eclipsing $300 million, it is also one major factor that caused New Line Cinema to declare bankruptcy shortly after its release.[4] It won a record-breaking eleven Academy Awards including Best Picture – tying with Ben-Hur (1959) and Titanic (1997) for the most wins for a single film – becoming the first fantasy film to ever be nominated for or win Best Picture.
