The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical drama film produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 stage musical of the same name, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film’s screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical’s book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.

The film tells the story of Maria von Trapp, a young Austrian woman who is hired as the governess of the seven children of a widowed naval captain in Salzburg in 1938. She falls in love with both the children and their father, but Austria is annexed into Nazi Germany in March 1938, which forces her to attempt to flee the country with her charges when Captain Georg von Trapp threatens to have them sent off to one of Adolf Hitler’s newly created military academies.

The Sound of Music was a critical and commercial success upon its release in 1965, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time at that point, until it was eclipsed by another 20th Century Fox production, Star Wars (1977). The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry; calling it “cinematically, historically or aesthetically significant.”
