What is the MCU?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a shared universe created by Marvel Studios, set primarily in the reality designated as Earth-199999 within Marvel’s multiverse system. The franchise features a large ensemble cast that has starred in numerous superhero films, television series, live-action and animated films and video games.

What is Venom?

Venom is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel[4] and Tencent Pictures. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is the first film in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC).[5][6] The film was directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg, and Kelly Marcel, and stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock / Venom.

Venom follows Brock, a journalist who becomes possessed by an alien symbiote that gives him superpowers. Hannah Berry, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott also star. In February 2015, Venom was announced as one of two films based on Spider-Man characters that would be developed by Sony (the other being The Sinister Six), after Sony and Disney failed to reach an agreement for Spider-Man to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films produced by Disney’s Marvel Studios. Venoms development began in March 2016 at Sony. Rosenberg and Pinkner were set to write while Fleischer was hired to direct in October 2017. Principal photography began in October 2017 in Atlanta and New York City.[7][8][9]

The connection between Venom and the MCU

Venom is not currently a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but there is a possibility that this could change in the future. While Sony currently holds the rights to the character, there have been rumors that the studio is considering partnering with Marvel Studios in order to bring Venom into the MCU.

In order for this to happen, Sony would need to agree to share the character with Marvel. However, it is important to note that Venom is not currently included in any of Marvel’s plans for Phase 4 of the MCU. So while there is potential for Venom to join the MCU at some point in the future, it seems unlikely that this will happen anytime soon.

Theories on how Venom could be introduced into the MCU

Venom could potentially be introduced into the MCU in a number of ways. One popular theory is that he could appear in a future Spider-Man film. Given that Venom is traditionally considered to be one of Spider-Man’s arch-enemies, it would make sense for him to eventually show up in a Spider-Man movie. Another possibility is that Venom could be introduced in a standalone film set within the MCU. This would allow Venom to be established as a character before potentially appearing in future MCU movies.

The potential benefits of Venom being in the MCU

While some may argue that Venom’s dark tone wouldn’t fit in with the rest of the MCU, there are actually a number of potential benefits to having the character join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For one, it would provide a nice change of pace from the usual superhero fare. Venom is a darker, more grounded character than many of the other heroes in the MCU, and his inclusion could provide a needed change of pace.

Additionally, it would give Marvel a chance to explore different genres within the superhero genre. While most of the MCU movies have been relatively light-hearted affairs, Venom could provide a much-needed shot of adrenaline and help to broaden the scope of what Marvel can do within the superhero genre.

Finally, it would simply be fun to see Venom interact with the other characters in the MCU. His snarky attitude and affinity for violence would no doubt lead to some interesting (and entertaining) interactions with the likes of Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Captain America.

The potential problems of Venom being in the MCU

There are potential problems with Venom being in the MCU. One is that Venom is an alien symbiote, and so far the MCU has not really dealt with aliens (other than the Chitauri in The Avengers). It’s possible that they could introduce Venom in a future film, but it would be a departure from what they’ve done so far.

Another problem is that Venom is a anti-hero, and the MCU has mostly been about heroes. It’s possible that they could make Venom work as a villain, but it would be a challenge.

The final problem is that Venom is rated R, and the MCU films have all been PG-13. It’s possible that they could release an R-rated Venom film, but it would be a departure from their usual business model.

Conclusion

Venom was not originally intended to be a part of the MCU. The movie was meant to be its own standalone thing. However, after the success of the movie, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said that they are open to the idea of Venom being in the MCU.
