Since the release of the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, fans have been clamoring for a third movie. However, with no word from either author Rick Riordan or Hollywood, it seems unlikely that a third movie will ever be made.
The Percy Jackson movies
The Percy Jackson movies are a series of films based on the Greek demigod Percy Jackson and his adventures in Camp Half-Blood. The first movie, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, was released in 2010, followed by Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters in 2013. Both films were directed by Chris Columbus and starred Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson.
The films were generally well-received by critics, with Rotten Tomatoes giving The Lightning Thief an approval rating of 75% and Sea of Monsters an approval rating of 60%. The films grossed a combined total of $687 million at the worldwide box office.
While there has been no official announcement, it is rumored that a third film may be in development.
The third Percy Jackson movie
At the moment, it does not look likely that there will be a third Percy Jackson movie. The first movie, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, was released in 2010 and was a modest box office success, grossing $226 million on a $95 million budget. The second movie, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, was released in 2013 and was a flop, grossing just $138 million on a $90 million budget.
While the first movie received generally positive reviews from critics, the second movie was savaged by critics, with many calling it an incoherent mess. It seems that the poor reviews of the second movie have scared away any potential investors for a third movie. At the moment, it looks like the Percy Jackson franchise is dead in the water.
Will there be a third Percy Jackson movie?
At the moment, it doesn’t look likely that there will be a third Percy Jackson movie. The Percy Jackson franchise is based on a series of five books, written by Rick Riordan. The first two movies, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, were both box office flops.
With the disappointing box office results of the first two films, it seems unlikely that a third film will be greenlit by Hollywood studios. However, fans of the series are still holding out hope that one day they may see a return of Percy Jackson on the big screen.
Why there might not be a third Percy Jackson movie
Though there has been no official confirmation, it seems increasingly unlikely that a third Percy Jackson movie will be made. There are a number of reasons why this might be the case, including poor box office performance and changing studio leadership.
The first Percy Jackson movie, released in 2010, was a modest success, grossing $226 million worldwide on a budget of $95 million. However, the sequel, released in 2013, bombed, earning just $131 million against a budget of $150 million. Given the declining interest in the franchise, it seems unlikely that a third movie would be greenlit by Fox, the studio behind the first two films.
In addition, there have been some changes at Fox since the last Percy Jackson movie was released. In 2014, Rupert Murdoch stepped down as CEO of 21st Century Fox (the parent company of Fox), to be replaced by his son Lachlan. Since then, Fox has undergone something of a reboot, with several key personnel changes. These changes likely contributed to the recent decision to cancel another franchise-based film series that had been in development at Fox: The Maze Runner.
Given all of this, it seems highly unlikely that we will ever see a third Percy Jackson movie.
The cast of the third Percy Jackson movie
It’s been 10 years since the release of the first Percy Jackson movie, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The 2010 film, based on the first book in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, was a hit with both audiences and critics. It grossed over $200 million at the box office and earned a 76% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
With its success, it’s no surprise that a sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, was released just two years later in 2013. Although it didn’t perform as well as its predecessor – grossing $131 million at the box office and receiving a 49% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes – it was still enough to warrant discussions of a third movie.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like those discussions have led to any concrete plans for a third Percy Jackson movie. In 2018, Riordan addressed the possibility of a third film adaptation of his work, saying “I don’t think [a third movie] is likely to happen…I think we had our time with that.”
This seems to be echoed by Logan Lerman, who played Percy Jackson in both films. In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lerman said that he “would love to do another one” but that he hasn’t heard anything about it happening.
The plot of the third Percy Jackson movie
Percy Jackson, the main character of the Percy Jackson book series, is a demigod, meaning his father is a Greek god. In the first movie, Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief, Percy discovers his father is Poseidon and sets out on a quest to prevent a war between the gods. In the second movie, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Percy must find the Golden Fleece in order to save his friend Annabeth.
The third movie, Percy Jackson: The Titan’s Curse, was set to be released in 2014, but it was ultimately cancelled.
The release date of the third Percy Jackson movie
The final book in the Percy Jackson series, The Last Olympian, was published in 2009. However, there has been no word on a third movie adaptation. The second movie, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, was released in 2013 to mixed reviews. It did not perform as well as the first movie, which was released in 2010. Since then, there has been no news about a third movie. It is possible that plans for a third movie have been scrapped.
At this point, it does not seem likely that there will be a third Percy Jackson movie. The second movie was not as successful as the first, and interest in the franchise seems to have waned in recent years. However, if interest in the franchise were to surge unexpectedly, then it is possible that a third movie could be greenlit.
