The globally phenomenon of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series began in 2005 with the publication of Twilight, quickly followed by New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn in 2006 and 2008, respectively. Since then, the franchise has only grown in popularity, spawning a successful film adaptation series, as well as numerous other ancillary products. But with the last book in the series having been published over a decade ago and the last movie release even longer ago, fans are wondering: is there a new Twilight movie coming out in 2021?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that there are any plans for a new Twilight movie in 2021. However, that’s not to say that there isn’t hope for the future. In 2019, it was announced that Meyer was working on a new book in the Twilight universe, titled Midnight Sun. This novel tells the story of Twilight from Edward Cullen’s perspective and was originally slated to be published in 2008. However, after an unfinished draft of the book was leaked online, Meyer decided to put publication on hold indefinitely.
With Midnight Sun finally set to be released later this year, fans are hopeful that this could be the start of a new era for the franchise. And while there are no official plans for a new movie at this time, it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility. So while we may not be getting a new Twilight movie in 2021, it’s still possible that we could see one in the near future.
The Twilight Saga
The Twilight Saga is a series of five romance fantasy films directed by Bill Condon and based on the novels of the same name by Stephenie Meyer. The films star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner.
The first installment, Twilight, was released on November 21, 2008. The second installment, New Moon, was released on November 20, 2009. The third installment, Eclipse, was released on June 30, 2010. All five movies were commercially successful; with Twilight being the most successful of the bunch grossing over $3 billion worldwide. Despite this success; with each movie getting progressively worse reviews from critics; it seemed unlikely that there would be another movie in the franchise anytime soon.
However; in September 2020 it was announced that there is indeed a new Twilight movie in development; with Meyer herself set to produce the film. No release date has been announced as of yet; but with production set to begin in early 2021; it’s likely that we’ll see the film sometime in late 2021 or early 2022.
